Eloping isn't wedding planning minus the work — it's a different, smaller graph with one item that bites couples who skip it. Here's the whole thing, in order.
First, the definition has changed
Modern eloping rarely means secrecy. It means a tiny, intentional ceremony — the two of you, maybe a handful of people — usually somewhere beautiful, at a fraction of the cost and months of lead time. Some couples follow it with a party at home; some don't. Both are complete weddings.
The six-month arc
6 months out — budget and place. Set the number, then choose the location. The location is most of an elopement's decisions: it sets the season, the permit situation, the travel, and the photography.
5 months — the legal bit (do not skip this). Check the marriage license requirements for your ceremony location early. They vary wildly by place: waiting periods between applying and marrying, license validity windows, witness requirements, whether an outdoor location needs a permit, and what makes an officiant legally recognized there. Destination elopements sometimes mean doing the legal signing at home and the ceremony abroad — a completely normal arrangement, better discovered five months out than five days.
4 months — the two vendors that matter. Book the officiant and the photographer. In most elopements photography is rightly the biggest spend — it's how everyone you love experiences the day, and it's what remains. Many elopement photographers know the licensing and permit rules for their locations cold; ask.
3 months — outfits. Elopement attire can skip the made-to-order lead times of a big wedding, but alterations still take weeks.
2 months — the people part. Plan announcements, or the celebration party if you're having one. If family doesn't know yet, this is the moment to decide how they find out — a phone call before an Instagram post preserves relationships; an announcement that reads "we chose smallness, not exclusion" lands softer than silence.
1 month — vows and logistics. With no MC and no schedule, an elopement ceremony is almost entirely your vows — give them the attention a bigger wedding gives the whole reception. Confirm travel, timing, sunrise/sunset hour, and a weather backup.
The week of — the license. Get it, per the rules you checked in month five. Bring it. Someone has to carry the pen.
What elopements cost
There's no meaningful "typical" number — the spread between a courthouse Tuesday and a helicopter-to-a-glacier Saturday is the entire range. What's consistent is the shape: photography and location-travel dominate, and the categories that scale with guest count simply vanish.
