A wedding cake in the US typically costs $3 to $8 per slice at a custom bakery. The average wedding cake lands around $500, most couples spend $300 to $700, and sugar flowers, hand piping and extra tiers push a cake past $1,000. Here is what sits inside those numbers, the two fees that surprise people, and the trick that keeps a big wedding's cake bill small.
The per-slice price
Bakeries price by the slice because that is how they size the cake: the guest count divided into tiers. Three things move the per-slice figure:
- Finish. Buttercream is the bottom of the range; fondant costs more and, most bakers will tell you, tastes worse — it earns its place for sharp edges and heat.
- Decoration. Fresh flowers (usually from your florist) are cheap to add; sugar flowers and hand piping are hours of skilled work and price like it.
- Tiers. Each tier is more structure, more baking and more assembly. Height is expensive; width is not.
A worked example, 120 guests
At $5 a slice, a cake sized for 120 is $600. Add a delivery and setup fee of $50 to $150 and the bakery's bill is roughly $650 to $750. Then the venue: most charge a cake-cutting fee of $1.50 to $4 per person to cut and plate a cake they did not make — another $180 to $480 that appears on the venue's invoice, not the baker's. Ask about it before you book either.
The trick: a display cake plus sheet cakes
Order a small, beautiful two-tier display cake for the cutting photos and the top table, and have the kitchen serve slices from plain sheet cakes in the same flavor. Nobody notices, and a cake for 150 becomes a cake for 40 plus sheets — the single biggest saving in this category. Dessert tables and mini-dessert bars, if you want them instead of or as well as a cake, run $6 to $12 per guest.
What to ask before you book
- Taste before booking, always — and taste the flavors you will actually order
- How far ahead they bake, how the cake travels, and who sets it up on what stand
- What happens above 80°F: buttercream sags, so an outdoor summer wedding needs a plan (shade, a late reveal, or fondant)
- Written confirmation of the design, flavors, size and delivery window
- Dietary versions — a gluten-free or vegan tier is usually easy if asked early
When to book
Book 4 to 6 months out, the tasting at 3 to 4 months, the final design and count 2 to 4 weeks before. The cake sits in the middle of the planning checklist for a reason: after the venue and caterer (who tell you about cutting fees and refrigeration), before the final headcount.
