Wedding Venue Capacity: What 253 US Venues Actually Hold

How many guests does a typical American wedding venue actually hold? We analyzed the capacity statements of 253 US wedding venues across 33+ metro areas — numbers published by the venues themselves — to find out. Data collected August 2026.

Key findings

  • The median US wedding venue maxes out at 275 guests. Half of the venues we analyzed state a maximum capacity between 200 and 400 guests.
  • Venues are built bigger than modern weddings. While couples increasingly plan smaller celebrations, only 16% of venues (41 of 253) list a maximum of 150 guests or fewer — the supply of genuinely intimate spaces is thin relative to the demand for small weddings.
  • 46% can host 300 or more guests (117 venues), and 21% (54 venues) state capacity for 500+.
  • The range is enormous: from 20 guests at the smallest venue to 2,000 at the largest in our data.

Methodology

WedGenie's vendor directory tracks 401 active US wedding venues across 40 metro areas. For 266 of them, our research pipeline has collected a capacity statement from the venue's own website or published materials (every fact in the directory is source-backed). Statements are free text — “up to 300 seated, 450 standing” — so we parsed each conservatively: square-footage figures were excluded, and we recorded the maximum guest count the venue itself claims in any configuration (seated or standing). 253 venues yielded a parseable number; the rest were excluded, never estimated.

This metric is an upper bound by construction — a venue's seated-dinner capacity is typically lower than its stated maximum. City medians are computed only where at least five venues parsed, and sample sizes are shown throughout.
